History Made Alive! Craig “Deks” Nordquist is a remarkable historian/storyteller offering a wide variety of historical programs for schools and organizations, mainly in the Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky area. Starting his career in Civil War reenacting in 1973, Deks has traveled the reenactor circuit participating in a great number and variety of living history events But if you talk with him, you'll quickly find that he loves students the best and develops an almost instant affinity with his audience. His wife of 32 years says this is because he still is a “little kid” himself. Deks is often assisted in these presentations by his good friend Tim Goodwin, who shares his ardent passion for Living History and is a lecturer in his own right.
“I love the study of history. It is easily the most important subject we ever take. For it is precisely that touching of our past which helps us maintain our society for the future. By understanding the sacrifices made, the striving for great achievement and the incredible effort to overcome our circumstances, we are able to keep ourselves and our nation morally strong and on a straight path.” This quote of Deks’ is why he speaks to so many audiences. How many? Over 500 different programs have been given to schools, churches, Scouting, clubs, and even governments in the past 37 years. Deks offers an amazingly broad array of programs. From European eras such as the Ancient Romans, Vikings and the Medieval Knight to the American struggles of the Revolution for Independence and the Civil War, to the world-wide calamities of World War I and II, Deks knows his history and brings it to his audience in a very personal and understanding way. To this very impressive list of historical eras, he also gives biographies on individuals who changed the world, such as Julius Caesar, Napoleon, George Washington, and Adolf Hitler along with stories of major events such as Pearl Harbor, the crucifixion of Christ, the development of the American flag and the coming to America by the Pilgrims.
“Human beings are very sensory oriented. For each program, I dress the part in authentic style clothing and carry a vast array of original and reproduction artifacts. Students participate throughout the program by dressing in costumes, eating samples of period foods, and learning the cultures through dance, art and war. Marriage customs, medicine, and daily life are not just shown, but demonstrated. We learn by experiencing. It is an awesome experience.”I encourage you to have this very uniquely gifted storyteller and knowledgeable historian come to your school, church, or organization. You will be amazed and the participants enthralled by the history they will learn. Below are just some of the portrayals Deks can bring to a classroom:
